8 Tips to Make your Parrot Happy

First, parrots are wild by nature, so they retain many behaviors and instincts in the wild. Second, parrots are not all the same species so you need to learn qualities of the parrot species when getting one. Lastly, parrots live longer than most other pets. Cocktails can live up to 20-30 years, while Macaws, Amazons, and Cockatoos can live up to 60-80 years old.

Here are some 8 tips on how to make your bird happy.

1. Consider Location, Temperature and Cage

Every parrot has different needs. Choose the cage according to the size of your bird and place it in the area where your bird will often interact with you. Don't keep your parrots near the kitchen as the odors from cooking and cleaning. Changing temperatures can have a big effect on your bird’s health. Parrots can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, so if you keep your house at a comfortable temperature for yourself, your parrot will also be comfortable. Temperature stability is the most important factor. Avoid the wooden cage for the parrot because they like to crash the things using its beak.

Putting or shutting them away in an isolated room is not a good option. This way, your parrot will become emotionally disturbed and can behave badly. A large parrot can make lots of noise. Whether they are yodeling a country song or yelling nonsense, you cannot count on your parrot to be quiet just because you want to sleep. Parrots toss fruit peels, seed casings, their toys, and the area around their cage can get very messy. The level of noise varies with the kind of the parrot and some of them is not recommended for flat or studio, for example the Macaws, because his voice too much loud.

3. Teach your parrot to talk

If you want your parrot to talk, you’ll need to spend a lot of time teaching them. Keep it short, two or three words are usually working the best. If intense, limit your teaching sessions to 15 minutes at a time or just repeat the same words and phrases a few times during your training.

4. Determine and vary your bird's diet

No one likes to have the same thing every single day. To determine what foods are his favorite treats, try giving him a variety of nuts, fresh and dried fruits, and seeds. It’s usually agreed that a parrot needs a mix of seed, pellet, fresh leafy greens, veggies, legumes, grains and some fruits. Keep in mind that parrots must never be fed chocolate, avocado, alcohol, caffeine, salty or sugary snacks. Some of those are poisonous to them. 5. Choose good toys for your parrot

It is part of your bird's behavior to tear things apart. Be sure to check their toys regularly for damage and throw them away if they have cracked or could break into small pieces that could injure parrot. The More important stay far from the plastic toys because if they eat part of the plastic it will be poison to them. Go with wooden toys, in general the birds like to play with wooden toys. The cage and the bottom of the cage must be cleaned regularly. Make sure you use a bird-safe disinfectant which you can buy in your local pet store.

7. Keep an eye for the feather health, beaks and claws

Parrots beak and claws needs to be filed. When the parrots claws grow too long, you have to visit the vet to trim. Never try to do it yourself if you don't have any background to do it because parrots have a very active blood supply to their claws and a cut could lead to a blood loss. Feather and beak condition are a great indicator of health. A lot of parrot deficiencies and diseases show up as poor feather condition or malformations of the beak. If your parrot shows change in feather or beak condition, see your vet as fast as possible.
